The Writer's Yearbook or The Best Way to Get to the Opera House

by Patricia Gaut

Yearbook front cover

Patricia Gaut's new book The Writer's Yearbook or The Best Way to Get to the Opera House is an essential book for writers.

* It will provide aspiring writers with the foundation of a craft that they will enjoy for a lifetime.

* It will give practising writers an impetus towards improvement and greater creativity.

* It will give teachers a broad basis on which to build and nurture their students talents.

The alternative title comes from an incident told about an American tourist in Sydney who asked 'Can you tell me the best way to get to the Opera House?' The local paused for a thoughtful moment before he replied 'Practise! Practise! Practise!'

It is the philosophy of that reply rather than its humour that has inspired Patricia in the writing of this book which has 52 chapters and more than 365 exercises, enough for every day of the year. The Writer's Yearbook is the result of many years of experience of teaching creative writing and will be an invaluable aid to practising writers as well as newcomers to the art. Patricia's strong conviction is that in any artistic endeavour, there are necessary techniques which can and should be learnt; that exercises, performed daily, can be anenjoyable way to develop understanding and confidence.

The emphasis is on practise, practise, practise!
